Oil Problem

Dear Bailey:

I have a 1993 Buick that has an oil gauge that goes crazy when I am driving. It moves from 0 to 870 very fast back and forth about 5 times a second and while under normal driving conditions. Then it will be steady at 280 for few minutes and then it will go crazy again. Any idea what that might be? What should I do? Is it serious? Any suggestions….?

Thanks,
Sump and Stumped

Dear Sump and Stumped,

The problem is probably your oil pressure sender unit. It is usually not a faulty gauge. The good news is that the oil pressure sender unit is not vital to the operation of your car, but proper oil pressure is! To make sure you still have pressure, turn off your car, make sure your car is topped up with oil and then turn your car on. Take the oil filler cap off and quickly put your hand over the hole. If your hand has oil on it then you have oil pressure and you are fine. If there is no oil on your hand after 30 seconds, shut off your car. You might have a bigger problem than your oil pressure sender unit.

I hope that helped your sump problems!
